Sally

My husband and I went to the Humane Society fully intending to adopt a puppy. As they bounced and leapt, we realized an older dog might be better and we saw and fell immediately in love with Sally who slept through the interview in her dog bed. We’re both fast walkers and Sally loved it. Once used to us, we let her off the leash and she was lame after every walk. We thought since she’d been in the pound 48 days she’d get over it. But she didn’t, so our vet examined her left rear leg to find she had a badly torn ACL ligament. Our choices were she could be a couch potato (no more walks), surgery, or put her down. The first and last were no options for us – we were in love with this sweet, smart full of life dog, but we’d just lost our cat to liver disease (lots of money) and Sally’s exam and diagnosis were lots of money and we were “pet money poor” now.
The Humane Society had no funds to help us and they gave us 4 numbers to call and ask for assistance. Shakespeare was first on the list my best all around experience. I was very emotional, having to make such a call and I found a compassionate, understanding Bill on the other end of the line. Sally had the surgery; she’s in her second week of recovery. Restricted activities make her anxious, and we feel like ogres having to say no, as she is healing so quickly, but thanks to the good Dr. and staff at Brinkby Animal Hospital and the generosity of Shakespeare Animal Fund, Sally is well on her way to a full and active life again.
