SAF: HELPING PETS & PEOPLE IN NEED

www.ShakespeareAnimalFund.org

SAF (Shakespeare Animal Fund) is a volunteer organization dedicated to financially assisting low income pet owners when their pets are in need of emergency veterinary care.

WAGGING TALES AND PURR-FECT ENDINGS

Here are a couple of stories that demonstrate the need for what SAF does - and that illustrate just some of what your donations can do to help pets in distress and their owners:

Belle is a young Chihuahua who had one of her legs severely injured one Christmas day while she was out having fun in the snow with her family. That night she couldn’t walk and was in substantial pain. Her parents called every vet they could, asking if the vet would take payments since money was very short after Christmas for their human kids. No one could help them. The family was referred to Shakespeare Animal Fund. The contact at SAF referred Belle’s family to a vet who works with SAF and who would take payments. SAF also contributed $100. for the initial emergency care. As it turned out, Belle’s leg was broken beyond repair and had to be amputated. But with that, Belle’s pain and suffering ceased. Today, Belle’s Mom says “She’s very happy and healthy today thanks to Shakespeare. Without the amputation the next option would have been euthanasia. And that was never an option for us, but we wouldn’t have made it without Shakespeare’s blessing. Thank you Shakespeare for your personal concern, support and financial donation ... God Bless Shakespeare ...”!

Here is another example:

Bessie is a mature Blue Tabby kitty and her human Mom is deaf and must use sign language to communicate. Bessie’s Mom says she is the best kitty she ever had, since Bessie is so sweet and loving and always stays next to her. Bessie’s Mom was worried about her left ear which was bothering her a great deal for several weeks. Bessie’s parents did not have the money to take her to the vet during those weeks. Mom says “can you imagine no vet for three weeks due to lack of funds?” SAF was able to assist this family in need. Bessie’s Mom says she is so glad she found SAF to help with Bessie’s need. She can’t imagine what they would have done without SAF. “Many thanks for your donation and help, Bessie is my baby and I love her so much.”

These happy endings and many others were made possible only through the generosity of our donors, some of whom are listed on the SAF website. We are so thankful to all the people who care enough to give of their hard-earned money, and therefore help us help pets and people in need. We invite you to become one of our “angel partners” by making a donation too!

MARCH MEETING

The March 19th annual meeting at Brew House Restaurant was well attended and bursting with great energy, ideas and enthusiasm! Here are some of our plans for 2008 - With the invaluable help and guidance of Joseph Galata, SAF intends to apply for financial grants which will enable us to grow so much more, and help so many more pets and their people.

Jennifer’s vision of SAF becoming a national organization might just be down this particular road. Some grant proposals are near to being completed, if they haven’t been already. Thanks and blessings to you, Joseph!

Pet Loss Support Group

We are pleased to announce the formation of a new pet loss support group which fills a need that is often not recognized. The grief of losing a four-legged baby can be compounded when those around you, even your closest loved ones, don’t truly understand the depth of your sorrow and loss. This support group can help validate those feelings and help healing to begin.

Newsletter Launch

On a lighter note, we are launching this new monthly newsletter that will help SAF spread the news of our mission and raise community awareness so that we can help more people and their pets.

Helping More Pets and People in Need

We will be sending out another round of mailers to generate much needed donations to be able to pay vet bills. Money is the gas that keeps this engine running! All the good intentions in the world, all the cheering from the sidelines will not save the life of a sick or injured pet if we don’t have the money to pay the vet bill. SAF does an incredible amount of good with the donations we receive, but consider this - in one 11 day period, we received 77 calls for help and could only help 21 of those. With your support, we can help more and turn down fewer people.

Want to Help?

By the way, looking for a (non-paying) job? SAF is looking for Veterinary Contacts. This volunteer position will act as the face and name of SAF to the veterinary clinics who work with us. This person or persons will be the crucial link between SAF and the veterinarians to keep the wheels of this relationship turning smoothly. The Veterinary Contact will be a personal liaison and make on-site visits to the vet hospitals to make sure all is going well, everyone is getting taken care of and especially that the vets are getting paid as they should. If you are good with people and enjoy schmoozing, this could be fun! A full job description is available.

Generous Donation for Donation Jars

At the meeting, Mary contribution was made and earmarked to purchase 20 doghouse donation jars to be placed at various locations around Reno. The sturdy jars are made of clear attractive plastic, can hold a small placard which will briefly describe our mission, and are shaped like - you guessed it - dog houses. If you see one of these cute little guys, please help it to fulfill its purpose in life and stuff some money into it. Thank you!

Letting People Know About SAF

We also heard a great proposal about regular PetSmart Table PR Events, wherein SAF could set up and staff tables a few times a month, probably on Sundays for a few hours in the afternoon. These information tables, complete with donation jars and volunteer sign up sheets, would help to raise public awareness of what we do and increase donations and our volunteer base.

New Officers

Last, we held elections for the positions of Secretary and Treasurer. Alysha Buch was elected Secretary and Paula Rightmire is our new Treasurer. This was Alysha’s first meeting with SAF, having heard about us from a friend, and we are happy to have a new participant who is willing to get involved so quickly. Paula is an accountant who is helping SAF with the important task of keeping our records on track and we applaud her for being willing to assume this new task as well. Thanks and Blessings to you both!

RECENT EVENTS / FUND RAISING / APPEARANCES

April 5 & 6, The Nevada Women’s Exposition - SAF staffed a table at this conference which was held at the Convention Center. Awareness of our organization, donations and new volunteers were the goals, as always. The SAF representatives met many interesting people, several of whom may turn out to be extremely good contacts for us in the future. We are excited about the opportunities that were discussed with the people who stopped by our table. We were also able to spread the word about SAF and get some people interested in volunteering with us.

April 9, Pet Loss Support Group - the first meeting was held in the Training Room at the Sierra Association of Foster Families, located at 3376 Lakeside Court in Reno, from 7 to 9 pm. These ongoing meetings are held each month at the above location and attendance is free for all participants. The first meeting was well attended and actually generated lots of publicity. A reporter from the Sparks Tribune attended this first meeting, and this resulted in an excellent feature story about SAF, complete with photos, which appeared in the 4/14 edition of the Tribune.

Also, thanks to Joseph Galata’s contacts, the Pet Loss Support Group was featured in a news segment on KOLO Channel 8 on 4/7. Jennifer Webb did a very professional job in talking about the Group and SAF.

In May, the meeting of the Pet Loss Support Group will be on Wednesday the 21st. See the website for additional information.

April 12, Best Friends Nevada Week for the Animals - SAF staffed a table at this very special event at the Livestock Events Center Exposition Hall from 10 am until 4 pm. The stars of the gathering were all the wonderful dogs and cats who needed homes. This “Adoptathon” was funded by the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary of Utah, and was sponsored by SAF, the Northern Nevada SPCA and the Nevada Humane Society. Many animal rescue groups were present, bringing animals who needed homes. The event was very successful because over 130 animals found new loving homes! SAF was a big part of it and we received some good publicity.

April 16, General Meeting - the public is always encouraged to attend at 6:30 pm at the Brew House Restaurant, located at the intersection of South McCarran and Kietzke Ln, next to Marie Calendar’s. We meet in the small meeting room, just ask the hostess to direct you. Your ideas and input are welcome.

April 20, Earth Day - although a little chilly, it was a beautiful day to be out enjoying our gorgeous piece of the planet here in Reno - raising awareness of the need to care for our Mother Earth and continuing to spread the word about Shakespeare Animal Fund. At yet another venue in which we represented SAF, we continued to meet more interesting people and keep the door open to future opportunities to help SAF grow.

VOLUNTEER CORNER - YOU REALLY CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Please Contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call 342-7040 If You Can Help Or Are Planning To Help Staffing Tables at Events - anyone who is interested can join us at our informational tables at upcoming events. This is a great way to learn all about SAF, especially if you want to help represent SAF at future appearances.

Your help is important for two reasons - most everything we do, including these appearances, is aimed at raising money to be able to help more pets and people. And, we have a shallow pool of volunteers at this time so those who have been willing to staff the tables up until now have had a lot of hours to cover and could use a little relief!

Coming up: We will be gathering at Jennifer’s house starting around noon to prepare our next fund raising mailing campaign. At this time, these mailers are our primary means of receiving donations and there are over 1500 pieces to be sent out. We could use all the helping hands we can get. Even just an hour or two would be great.

Veterinary Contacts - contact Mary by This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to receive a detailed job description. As explained above, this position is extremely important to the ongoing cooperation by the veterinary hospitals who treat the pets we refer to them. After all, if we didn’t have our veterinary partners who were willing to work with us, then SAF would no longer exist.

It is likely that these Contact positions would be assigned as geographical regions, so that each SAF representative would be visiting vet hospitals that were closest to their own part of town, especially with the price of gas these days! It would be something like “sales reps”, each with their own “territory”. If you have the time and you would like making such a huge contribution to SAF, we need you !!!

Proposed PetSmart PR Events - once this gets rolling, we will have a regular, ongoing need for people to man the tables. It will be fun - get away from it all for a few hours, sit and chat with other people like yourself who love animals, spread the word about SAF and help raise money and gather volunteers. That’s a lot of good that can be done in less time than it takes to watch a football game!

Please consider joining our team! Board Members, Committee Members, Committee Chairpersons - If you have a special interest or way that you would like to help companion animals and their owners, chances are we have a need for it. The more varied the expertise of our members and partners, the more good we can do. Please contact Jennifer to get an overview of our needs. If you have a general inquiry, or want to reach us, please send to our email, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. www.ShakespeareAnimalFund.org

SAF (Shakespeare Animal Fund) is a volunteer organization dedicated to financially assisting low income pet owners when their pets are in need of emergency veterinary care.

WAGGING TALES AND PURR-FECT ENDINGS

We regularly get stories from those we've helped. Here we'll share just a few of them so you can see what your donations do to help pets in distress and their owners:

One weekend in early May, SAF became aware of a woman who desperately needed help with her female service dog, Roxie. After serving her human Mom faithfully, Roxie developed bone cancer in one of her legs and that leg had to be amputated to keep the cancer from spreading and eventually killing her.

But the problem was, the woman could not pay the veterinary medical bills associated with the surgery. Roxie was being kept at the veterinary clinic until her Mom could come up with at least half of the money. A man who writes a blog for dogs at the Reno Gazette Journal contacted SAF and asked if we would be recipients of donations for Roxie so that the dog could be reunited with her Mom and get to go back to her loving home. Of course we agreed!

SAF also added money from our funds to reach the required amount for Roxie’s release. Jennifer Webb, our executive director, spoke with the woman on a Friday night, took a check to the vet’s on Saturday and the very grateful and relieved woman got her beloved companion back.

Here is another example:

A family had a house fire and very sadly lost their cat and one of their dogs. Their second dog, Kylie, had severe smoke inhalation and according to Kylie’s human Mom, was “one minute away from dying.”

The family took her into the emergency clinic where she was treated and stabilized. But after that, Kylie needed more tests and treatment because smoke from fires can cause such damage to the lungs.

Unfortunately, the family had run out of money and could not afford anything more to be done for Kylie. SAF authorized enough money to cover chest x-rays which would show pneumonia, and as much as we could for more treatment. After what this family has been through, we at SAF are committed to getting Kylie back to health and offered the family whatever further assistance our funds would allow.

These happy endings and many others were made possible only through the generosity of our donors, some of whom are listed on the SAF website. We are so thankful to all the people who care enough to give of their hard-earned money, and therefore help us help pets and people in need. We invite you to become one of our “angel partners” by making a donation too!

MAY MEETING

The monthly general meeting was held on June 21, at the Brew House restaurant at 6:30 pm. The public is always invited to our meetings and we hope to see you there sometime. Here is the latest news we discussed:

Good People Come and Good People Go

We are saddened by the loss of a few key members of SAF but do understand that change is always a part of growth. We are extremely grateful for all of the time and work that our fellow animal lovers devoted to SAF, and we wish them all the best in their future endeavors.

On the flip side, we are excited to welcome two new members who are willing to assume important positions.

First, is Mindy Maulucci who will be our new Volunteer Coordinator. This position is vital to our workings since it helps ensure that all of our volunteers have a positive experience with SAF, and it helps us stay efficient with our activities. Mindy is a schoolteacher, so hopefully her experience with “wrangling” those little angels will help keep us in line too! Thanks and Blessings to you Mindy for your help.

Second, is Cindi Mitchell who will be one of our new Veterinary Liaisons. This is also a vital position, since it involves maintaining good, positive relationships with our Veterinary partners. The Liaison is someone who makes sure that the vet hospitals have the kind of experience with SAF that will make them willing to continue to work with us, and therefore keep helping pets and their people.

Cindi is a sales representative who makes the rounds in Reno, and so will be dropping by some vet clinics to make sure all is well with the vets’ experience with SAF. In the past, her cat had been injured and she found herself in the position of needing and receiving help from SAF. Being a Veterinary Liaison for us is her way of giving back to SAF. She is positive and energetic and really looking forward to this work. Thanks and Blessings to you Cindi for your help too.

Grant Writing Pays Off

Thanks to the hard work of Joseph Galata, SAF has received its first grant!!! We are blessed to be the recipient of five thousand dollars from the Robert Z. Hawkins Foundation. This money will go into the general fund for operating expenses. In the world of grants, this is a relatively small but very important beginning. A substantial grant could take us to a new level of growth where we could say “yes” to the majority of the people who call us for help. Joseph and Jennifer will continue to work on procuring more grants.

SAF Helps With Fire Safety For Pets

Last year, over 40,000 pets perished in house fires, primarily because firefighters and other rescue personnel did not know there were pets in the house who needed to be saved. SAF has had 10,000 pet fire safety stickers printed and we are giving them to pet owners.

The “Please Save My Pets” stickers are large and bright and indicate the number and type of pets in the household. The stickers can be placed on the outside of the home or in windows for firefighters to see. A sticker was placed into every envelope during our recent donation drive mailing, and they will be given to the public at every event we attend. SAF is giving these stickers away for free of charge. As always, if you feel moved to do so, any size donation is much appreciated.

Pet Loss Support Group Continues

The second meeting of our new Pet Loss Support Group was held May 21 from 7 to 9 pm at 3378 Lakeside Ct (off Moana & Lakeside). The first meeting was a tremendous success. Even reporters who were just there to get some news became very involved.

We are so thankful to be able to provide such help to those who have lost a beloved pet. This group is really affecting people in a wonderful way. Those who attended said it was a tremendous help during their grief.

You don’t have to have lost a pet to attend. Just being there to support those who need it is so very helpful to them. Tom Henkenius of Channel 2 News provided more publicity for the Group, but please do tell anyone you know who might need the Group’s help. See the Events section below for the next meeting time and place.

Pet Taxi Ready For Take-Off

This past winter, Mary Burns, an SAF volunteer, found herself on crutches with a broken ankle, snowed in and with a cat that needed to get to the vet clinic ASAP. She had been asking for so much help from friends for things like grocery shopping and errands, that she didn’t want to impose any further on anyone she knew. Besides, the roads were really bad with snow and she lives up in Galena.

So she called a professional pet transportation service listed in the phone book. She was stunned to hear they didn’t drive out to where she lived.

She ended up lugging her heavy kitty, “Joey,” to the vet clinic herself. (Joey is not fat, mind you - he is just a very big boy and real solid!) Not being able to pick up his carrier made the transfer from house to car, while on crutches in the snow, quite a production!

Later when Mary was back on her feet she called SAF to become a volunteer and also offered her services as SAF’s “pet taxi” for those who really needed it. This experience had made her wonder how some elderly or disabled pet owners got their sick pets to a clinic if they had no one to drive them. Taxis are expensive and buses are difficult. So she is willing to drive someone who has no other way to get to the vet’s. The request can be made to our phone workers who take calls for SAF assistance at 775-342-7040.

We Need Your Help With...

We are looking for someone who could serve as Secretary for SAF. This involves attending our monthly meetings and writing up the minutes of that meeting.

Also, please ask all of your animal-loving friends to visit our website and sign up for the newsletter. This is a great way to help us grow.

In the events section below, you can learn about our upcoming annual fund-raiser. We are looking for new items or services that could be part of our raffle, which will help us to raise money.

If anyone is willing to write an article about SAF, who we are and what we do, this article would be accepted by the local pet magazine Pet Folio for publication. This would be a super way to spread the word about SAF and perhaps generate some donations.

RECENT EVENTS

June 1, Donation Mailing - We had an excellent turn out of volunteers on this beautiful Sunday afternoon. We met at Jennifer’s house and worked steadily labeling and stuffing over 1600 envelopes with the SAF letter of appeal, pet safety stickers and return donation envelopes. With so many helping hands we finished in record time. To all who gave up their Sunday afternoon to help, we extend sincere thanks and appreciation. These mailings are a major source of our donated funds and we couldn’t have done it without you!

June 7, Walk For Animals - Sponsored by the Humane Society and held at the Sparks Marina, this fund-raiser consisted of a 2 mile fun walk with lots of activities including music, raffle prizes, refreshments, pet photos, pet contests and prizes for the top 5 fund raising walkers. The goal was to raise $100,000 to help homeless animals. Many people stopped by our table and signed up for our newsletter. There was a great deal of interest shown in our organization. SAF gave away many “Save My Pet” stickers. And, we were able to place 2000 flyers about our fall fund-raiser, Halloween Howl, into the gift bags that were given to the people who participated in the walk.

June 14, Pet Fair - Del Webb, the senior community at Sommerset, hosted a pet fair which was sponsored by their Home Owner’s Association. SAF was represented during this fun pet-friendly event. It was another great opportunity to raise community awareness of who we are and what we do, to gather more names for our newsletter mailing list and give away more “Save My Pet” stickers.

WAGGING TALES AND PURR-FECT ENDINGS

We regularly get stories from those we've helped. Here we'll share just a few of them so you can see what your donations do to help pets in distress and their owners:

A young pup named Snooker became extremely ill with the dreaded parvo virus. This disease requires aggressive treatment to prevent death. His human mom needed help with the expensive treatment in order to save her pup’s life. SAF was able to help her with a contribution towards the medical expenses.

Snooker did recover and his mom reports he is doing well. She is very grateful to SAF and says “Your love of animals is wonderful, you’re all Angels of Animals.”

Here is another example:

A tiny kitten, about 6 or 8 weeks old and very underweight, was found abandoned and very sick. Her new mom named her Shadow and tried to give her a home.

But Shadow’s mom was going through some very difficult times, both personally and financially. She knew the kitten needed to go to the vet’s but she didn’t have the money for treatment. She asked a few people for help but they said the kitty should just be taken to the “pound”. Shadow’s mom didn’t want to do that because she knew they would probably put the kitten to sleep. One of its problems was upper respiratory infection, which is very contagious to other cats.

Shadow’s mom called SAF and we were able to help with the cost of the vet bill. Today Shadow is a beautiful, sweet beloved kitty who sleeps with her human mom and plays with the other kitty in the family. Her mom says “Thank you SAF for the help. We couldn’t have done it without you.”

These happy endings and many others were made possible only through the generosity of our donors, some of whom are listed on the SAF website. We are so thankful to all the people who care enough to give of their hard-earned money, and therefore help us help pets and people in need. We invite you to become one of our “angel partners” by making a donation too!

JUNE MEETING

The monthly general meeting was held on June 18, at the Brew House restaurant at 6:30 pm. The public is always invited to our meetings and we hope to see you there sometime. Here is the latest news we discussed:

Local Business Owner Makes Fabulous Offer To SAF

Sharon is a Reno woman who owns a business named Tell ‘Em Promotions. This company creates promotional items such as tee shirts and ball caps and banners. The items are silk-screened walking advertisements for companies to help them promote their businesses.

She very generously offered a variety of promotional items to SAF at cost, meaning we would only pay what the items cost her. One great idea she had was to create the trick or treat bags for our upcoming Halloween Howl in October.

These promotional items would be a wonderful way for SAF to continue to build name recognition in the Reno area, and we are very grateful to Sharon for this thoughtful offer.

Donations Winging Their Way To SAF

In the last edition of the newsletter, we described our most recent mailing event which was well attended and therefore completed fairly quickly. We also expressed our gratitude to all those who showed up and stuffed envelopes for hours.

From June 2, when the mailing was posted, until the June 18th meeting, we received about $1200. Considering the present economic climate, we are grateful for this initial response. We are hopeful of a healthy infusion of cash into our general funds before it is all over.

Again, to everyone who participated in the mailing, you have our deep gratitude. And to all who have donated, or who will donate because of the mailing, Thanks and Blessings to you! It is only because of our donors that we are able to continue to help people and their pets.

SAF Puts On A Pretty New Face

At the meeting, we all got a chance to see a proof of the new brochure that is being developed for SAF. It is really quite impressive and professional in appearance.

This new full color brochure was created by Erin at The Glenn Group. Our own board member, Jessie Turner, is helping with the printing of the brochure, and we are blessed to be receiving about 22,000 of them at  no cost.  That means it costs us nothing! Can it get any better than that?

SAF will save several thousand dollars, which means we can spend that money to continue helping more people and their pets. Thank you so very much Erin, Jessie and The Glenn Group.

And The Winner Is...

SAF unfortunately did not win the Pet Folio magazine Readers Choice prize, which consists of all the proceeds from this years Art Paws in the Park. We are disappointed to not be the beneficiary because we could do a lot of good for people and their pets with that money, but we already have an excellent idea for next year’s contest.

At future events where we represent SAF, we are going to give simple forms to all those who stop by our table. These forms will be easy to fill out and submit to Pet Folio, and they will of course nominate SAF as the beneficiary of the Art Paws proceeds. Hopefully, this will greatly increase the number of votes we receive and we will all be winners next year.

Who Do You Know?

Jennifer Webb had the pleasure of speaking to the Sierra Graphics Network, a professional club, on June 16. By talking to this group about SAF and all the wonderful things we do, she was able to generate a lot of interest in our organization. This interest translates into great networking opportunities and new contacts. New contacts can mean growth for SAF, greater financial support from the community and fresh volunteers.

As we represent SAF at more and more events, the need for volunteers is really growing. One of Jennifer’s present goals is to speak to every philanthropic group in Reno-Sparks. That is where you come in. Do you belong to such a group? Are they looking for speakers for their meetings? If so, please get in touch with Jennifer at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. This email address is being protected from spambots. We Need Your Help With...

We are looking for someone who could serve as Secretary for SAF. This involves attending our monthly meetings and writing up the minutes of that meeting.

Please ask all of your animal-loving friends to visit our website and sign up for the newsletter. This is a great way to help us grow. You can also read past newsletters on the website. If you have news that should be included, contact Mary at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. Our annual fund-raiser is coming up in October, and you can learn more about it in the events section below. We are looking for new items or services that could be part of our raffle, which will help us raise money. If your business or place of employment would be willing to donate new items or services, please contact us.

If anyone is willing to write an article about SAF, who we are and what we do, Pet Folio magazine will publish it. This would be a super way to spread the word about SAF and perhaps generate some donations.

We also need someone who is great with computers who can give us some technical assistance.

The need for volunteers to sit at our table at events, and tell people about SAF, is so great that we are pleading for your help both here and in the Volunteer Corner!

July 23, Monthly SAF General Meeting - We meet at the Brew House restaurant, located on the northeast corner of South McCarran and Kietzke Lane. The meeting begins at 6:30 pm sharp and lasts about 45 minutes. It is open to all and we would love to see you there. It’s a great way to become involved with SAF. We gather in the small meeting room that is to the right of the hostess desk when you enter. If the door is closed (which is often the case due to noise) please do not hesitate to come in.

July 27 is our first PetCo Sunday! We need people from noon to 2pm and from 2pm to 4 pm at the South Virginia Street PetCo. These appearances will generate much needed donations, new members and new volunteers for us. Come have fun meeting and greeting fellow pet lovers while helping spread the word about SAF helping pets and people in need.

August 13, Pet Loss Support Group - the group meets to help grieving pet parents from 6 to 8 pm at the Northwest Reno Library at 2325 Robb Dr, Reno. Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month.

August 17, Our Second PetCo Sunday! We need people from noon to 2pm and from 2pm to 4pm at the South Virginia St PetCo. September (date pending) Cat Show - We have been invited by the Silver Cats Club of Reno to represent SAF at their international 3 day cat show being held at the Grand Sierra Resort. The show will be huge, with many participants. We really need volunteers to staff the table over the 3 days. Robin Hendrickson, president of the Club and show manager, has generously given us a table for without cost, so please help us take advantage of this opportunity.

OCTOBER 18th, 6 - 9 pm, SAF ANNUAL FUND-RAISER, a.k.a. “HALLOWEEN HOWL” - This is our largest event of the year and a major source of fund-raising for SAF. Please help us make it a success by telling everyone you know! We need help to get the word out!

This special night is going to be a one-of-a-kind COSTUME BALL FOR PEOPLE AND THEIR PETS. It will be held at the Reno Livestock Events Center, Exhibit Hall and is being coordinated by Karen Nichols. You and your pet can come in costume and enjoy the many activities including having your photo taken with your pet, a fortune teller, a pet psychic, various prizes for different categories of costumes and raffles of many wonderful prizes. There will be many vendors there that will allow you and your pet to trick-or-treat among them. Please mark your calendars and start thinking about your costumes!

We will need LOTS of help to put on this event, so please consider volunteering.

Staffing Tables at Events - Come join us at our informational tables at upcoming events.

Veterinary Liaisons - Contact Mary at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to receive a detailed job description. This position is extremely important to support the ongoing cooperation by the veterinary hospitals that treat the pets we refer to them. After all, if we didn’t have our veterinary partners who were willing to work with us, then SAF would no longer exist. These Liaison positions will be assigned as geographical regions, so that each SAF representative would be visiting vet hospitals that were closest to their own part of town, especially with the price of gas these days! It would be something like “sales reps”, each with their own “territory.” If you have the time and you would like making such a huge contribution to SAF, we need you!

PetCo "Get the Word Out" Events - We have a regular, ongoing need for people to man tables at PetCo. It is fun to get away from it all for a few hours, sit and chat with other animal lovers. You'll spread the word about SAF, help raise money and gather volunteers. That’s a lot of good that can be done in less time than it takes to watch a football game!

Board Members, Committee Members, Committee Chairpersons - If you have a special interest or way that you would like to help companion animals and their owners, chances are we have a need for it. The more varied the expertise of our members and partners, the more good we can do. Please contact Jennifer to get an overview of our needs.

SAF (Shakespeare Animal Fund) is a volunteer organization dedicated to financially assisting low income pet owners when their pets are in need of emergency veterinary care.

Abbreviated Issue for August

Summer is busy for everyone and SAF is no different. We're putting a lot of energy into the Halloween Howl coming up in October. In addition, the Pet Loss Support Group continues to meet every month and we're spreading the word about helping pets and their owners at PetCo. See the Upcoming Events section below for dates and details.

Also, you can now see all of the upcoming events at the SAF website. We've just installed a calendar of upcoming events that shows a month at a time. It's an easy way to see the exciting things SAF is doing. You can find the calendar here:

 http://shakespeareanimalfund.org/calendar.html

Next month we plan on resuming our more complete newsletter, but today's issue will just focus on upcoming events.

Thanks for your understanding and support... and have a great summer! We'll be back with more in September.
