SAF (Shakespeare Animal Fund) is a volunteer organization dedicated to financially assisting low income pet owners when their pets are in need of emergency veterinary care.
We regularly get stories from those we've helped. Here we'll share just a few of them so you can see what your donations do to help pets in distress and their owners:
A young pup named Snooker became extremely ill with the dreaded parvo virus. This disease requires aggressive treatment to prevent death. His human mom needed help with the expensive treatment in order to save her pup’s life. SAF was able to help her with a contribution towards the medical expenses.
Snooker did recover and his mom reports he is doing well. She is very grateful to SAF and says “Your love of animals is wonderful, you’re all Angels of Animals.”
Here is another example:
A tiny kitten, about 6 or 8 weeks old and very underweight, was found abandoned and very sick. Her new mom named her Shadow and tried to give her a home.
But Shadow’s mom was going through some very difficult times, both personally and financially. She knew the kitten needed to go to the vet’s but she didn’t have the money for treatment. She asked a few people for help but they said the kitty should just be taken to the “pound”. Shadow’s mom didn’t want to do that because she knew they would probably put the kitten to sleep. One of its problems was upper respiratory infection, which is very contagious to other cats.
Shadow’s mom called SAF and we were able to help with the cost of the vet bill. Today Shadow is a beautiful, sweet beloved kitty who sleeps with her human mom and plays with the other kitty in the family. Her mom says “Thank you SAF for the help. We couldn’t have done it without you.”
These happy endings and many others were made possible only through the generosity of our donors, some of whom are listed on the SAF website. We are so thankful to all the people who care enough to give of their hard-earned money, and therefore help us help pets and people in need. We invite you to become one of our “angel partners” by making a donation too!
The monthly general meeting was held on June 18, at the Brew House restaurant at 6:30 pm. The public is always invited to our meetings and we hope to see you there sometime. Here is the latest news we discussed:
Sharon is a Reno woman who owns a business named Tell ‘Em Promotions. This company creates promotional items such as tee shirts and ball caps and banners. The items are silk-screened walking advertisements for companies to help them promote their businesses.
She very generously offered a variety of promotional items to SAF at cost, meaning we would only pay what the items cost her. One great idea she had was to create the trick or treat bags for our upcoming Halloween Howl in October.
These promotional items would be a wonderful way for SAF to continue to build name recognition in the Reno area, and we are very grateful to Sharon for this thoughtful offer.
In the last edition of the newsletter, we described our most recent mailing event which was well attended and therefore completed fairly quickly. We also expressed our gratitude to all those who showed up and stuffed envelopes for hours.
From June 2, when the mailing was posted, until the June 18th meeting, we received about $1200. Considering the present economic climate, we are grateful for this initial response. We are hopeful of a healthy infusion of cash into our general funds before it is all over.
Again, to everyone who participated in the mailing, you have our deep gratitude. And to all who have donated, or who will donate because of the mailing, Thanks and Blessings to you! It is only because of our donors that we are able to continue to help people and their pets.
At the meeting, we all got a chance to see a proof of the new brochure that is being developed for SAF. It is really quite impressive and professional in appearance.
This new full color brochure was created by Erin at The Glenn Group. Our own board member, Jessie Turner, is helping with the printing of the brochure, and we are blessed to be receiving about 22,000 of them at no cost. That means it costs us nothing! Can it get any better than that?
SAF will save several thousand dollars, which means we can spend that money to continue helping more people and their pets. Thank you so very much Erin, Jessie and The Glenn Group.
SAF unfortunately did not win the Pet Folio magazine Readers Choice prize, which consists of all the proceeds from this years Art Paws in the Park. We are disappointed to not be the beneficiary because we could do a lot of good for people and their pets with that money, but we already have an excellent idea for next year’s contest.
At future events where we represent SAF, we are going to give simple forms to all those who stop by our table. These forms will be easy to fill out and submit to Pet Folio, and they will of course nominate SAF as the beneficiary of the Art Paws proceeds. Hopefully, this will greatly increase the number of votes we receive and we will all be winners next year.
Jennifer Webb had the pleasure of speaking to the Sierra Graphics Network, a professional club, on June 16. By talking to this group about SAF and all the wonderful things we do, she was able to generate a lot of interest in our organization. This interest translates into great networking opportunities and new contacts. New contacts can mean growth for SAF, greater financial support from the community and fresh volunteers.
We are looking for someone who could serve as Secretary for SAF. This involves attending our monthly meetings and writing up the minutes of that meeting.
Our annual fund-raiser is coming up in October, and you can learn more about it in the events section below. We are looking for new items or services that could be part of our raffle, which will help us raise money. If your business or place of employment would be willing to donate new items or services, please contact us.
If anyone is willing to write an article about SAF, who we are and what we do, Pet Folio magazine will publish it. This would be a super way to spread the word about SAF and perhaps generate some donations.
We also need someone who is great with computers who can give us some technical assistance.
The need for volunteers to sit at our table at events, and tell people about SAF, is so great that we are pleading for your help both here and in the Volunteer Corner!

July 23, Monthly SAF General Meeting - We meet at the Brew House restaurant, located on the northeast corner of South McCarran and Kietzke Lane. The meeting begins at 6:30 pm sharp and lasts about 45 minutes. It is open to all and we would love to see you there. It’s a great way to become involved with SAF. We gather in the small meeting room that is to the right of the hostess desk when you enter. If the door is closed (which is often the case due to noise) please do not hesitate to come in.
July 27 is our first PetCo Sunday! We need people from noon to 2pm and from 2pm to 4 pm at the South Virginia Street PetCo. These appearances will generate much needed donations, new members and new volunteers for us. Come have fun meeting and greeting fellow pet lovers while helping spread the word about SAF helping pets and people in need.
August 13, Pet Loss Support Group - the group meets to help grieving pet parents from 6 to 8 pm at the Northwest Reno Library at 2325 Robb Dr, Reno. Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month.
August 17, Our Second PetCo Sunday! We need people from noon to 2pm and from 2pm to 4pm at the South Virginia St PetCo. These appearances will generate much needed donations, new members and new volunteers for us. Come have fun meeting and greeting fellow pet lovers while helping spread the word about SAF helping pets and people in need.
September (date pending) Cat Show - We have been invited by the Silver Cats Club of Reno to represent SAF at their international 3 day cat show being held at the Grand Sierra Resort. The show will be huge, with many participants. We really need volunteers to staff the table over the 3 days. Robin Hendrickson, president of the Club and show manager, has generously given us a table for without cost, so please help us take advantage of this opportunity.
OCTOBER 18th, 6 - 9 pm, SAF ANNUAL FUND-RAISER, a.k.a. “HALLOWEEN HOWL” - This is our largest event of the year and a major source of fund-raising for SAF. Please help us make it a success by telling everyone you know! We need help to get the word out!
This special night is going to be a one-of-a-kind COSTUME BALL FOR PEOPLE AND THEIR PETS. It will be held at the Reno Livestock Events Center, Exhibit Hall and is being coordinated by Karen Nichols. You and your pet can come in costume and enjoy the many activities including having your photo taken with your pet, a fortune teller, a pet psychic, various prizes for different categories of costumes and raffles of many wonderful prizes. There will be many vendors there that will allow you and your pet to trick-or-treat among them. Please mark your calendars and start thinking about your costumes!
We will need LOTS of help to put on this event, so please consider volunteering.
Staffing Tables at Events - Come join us at our informational tables at upcoming events. This is a great way to learn all about SAF, especially if you want to help represent SAF at future appearances. Your help is important for two reasons - most everything we do, including these appearances, is aimed at raising money to be able to help more pets and people. And, we have a shallow pool of volunteers at this time so those who have been willing to staff the tables up until now have had a lot of hours to cover and could use a little relief!
PetCo "Get the Word Out" Events - We have a regular, ongoing need for people to man tables at PetCo. It is fun to get away from it all for a few hours, sit and chat with other animal lovers. You'll spread the word about SAF, help raise money and gather volunteers. That’s a lot of good that can be done in less time than it takes to watch a football game!
Board Members, Committee Members, Committee Chairpersons - If you have a special interest or way that you would like to help companion animals and their owners, chances are we have a need for it. The more varied the expertise of our members and partners, the more good we can do. Please contact Jennifer to get an overview of our needs.
Thanks for reading our news and we would love to hear from you!
